3-vehicle semi-truck and car crash kills 2

Pennsylvania State Police officials reported that two people were killed when their vehicle was crushed in between two semi-trucks on Nov. 22. According to reports, the accident happened on Interstate 80 in Marion Township around 4:30 p.m. near mile marker 170 in the westbound lanes of the interstate.

Authorities reported that a Volvo occupied by a 59-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man Delmar, New York, was slowing down behind a tractor-trailer due to area traffic. Another tractor-trailer sped up behind, colliding with their vehicle and crushing it between the two trucks.

Both car occupants were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by responding emergency personnel. Traffic had been slowed on the interstate due to freezing rain conditions on that date. Law enforcement officials indicated that charges against the truck driver who slammed into the back of the Volvo are pending at this time. There is no word on whether alcohol or drugs factored into the crash.

Many people are seriously injured or killed in truck accidents every year. When such an accident is caused by the negligence of a truck driver, the family of those who are killed may be able to hold both the driver as well as the company for whom the driver works civilly liable by filing a wrongful death lawsuit. Civil lawsuits may be filed even when criminal charges are not filed. Civil cases have a lower burden of proof than do criminal charges, and civil cases are independent of any criminal case regarding the same actions. Through a civil lawsuit, families may be able to recover compensation for the economic and noneconomic losses they have suffered as a result of their loved one's death. As such, families of those killed may wish to consult with a personal injury attorney.
